Study abroad in Mexico and explore the Latin American immigration experience and the many significant connections between the United States and Mexico.
Join in learning about what might be your own roots and connecting with Hispanic students, their families and Latin American history and culture.
Through a hybrid online and in-person experience in Mexico City, you will enroll in
Global Studies 2001 or 2003 and learn about topics such as US and Mexico immigration
history, Mexican regional cultural differences, the Mexico education systems, and
others.

Travel dates: July 9-18, 2024
Through a hybrid online and in-person experience in Mexico, you will enroll in Global Studies 2001 or 2003 and learn about these important topics:
- U.S. and Mexico immigration history
- U.S. and Mexican immigration law and policies including paths to citizenship and both opportunities for and barriers to legal status in both the United States and Mexico.
- Mexican regional cultural differences
- Rural vs urban life in Mexico
- The Mexican economy
- U.S. economic interest and policies in Latin America
- Family migration histories
- The Mexican education system
- Central and South American immigrant experience in Mexico
- Current political issues in Mexico that relate to migration and immigration
Community members may audit (AU) with permission of the instructor.
Projected Travel Itinerary
July 9
- Depart XNA for Mexico City
- Arrive at Benito Juarez and private bus transfer to Centro
- Check into hotel, drop bags and refresh
- Orientation walking tour of the neighborhood. Identify pharmacy, grocery story/bodega, ATMs, public safety facilities.
- Historical and cultural walking tour of the Center with certified local guides
- Welcome Dinner
July 10
- Breakfast at hotel
- Transfer to Casa Tochan to meet with refugee aid organizers to learn more about their work with Central American migrants in Mexico.
- Service-learning project
- Group lunch
- Market walking culinary tour
- Free time and cultural immersion in Centro, dinner on your own/small groups
July 11
- Breakfast at the hotel, morning discussion of what we experienced the previous day at Casa Tochan
- Transfer to Chapultepec Castle and National Museum of Anthropology guided tour
- Group lunch
- Transfer to la Casa Azul for a private guided tour
- Group dinner and discussion of Frida’s self-portrait on the Borderline between Mexico and the United States, 1932
July 12
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Transfer to The Zona Arqueológica de Teotihuacán and Basilica de Guadalupe guided tour
- Group lunch and discussion
- Farewell to Mexico City group dinner
July 13
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Transfer to migrant village
- Overnight in Migrant Village and delivery of service-learning collected items for kids and migrants living in the village
- Service Learning and discussion with villagers
- Group lunch
- Group dinner
July 14
- Breakfast in the village
- Transfer to Puebla
- Lunch and food tour
- Continue to Oaxaca
- Check into Holiday Inn Express Oaxaca-Centro Historico, an IHG Hotel, drop bags and refresh
- Neighborhood orientation walking tour: Identify pharmacy, grocery story/bodega, ATMs, public safety facilities.
- Group dinner
July 15
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Transfer to Collin A.C migrant support organization, service-learning lunch service project
- Group Lunch, Discussion
- Oaxaca Architecture City tour and Santo Domingo colonial art history museum
- Return to hotel to relax/refresh
- Traditional Chocolate making class
- Group dinner
July 16
- Breakfast at the hotel
- Benito Juarez culinary market tour
- Return to hotel to relax and refresh
- Farewell to Mexico group dinner

- Free time and cultural immersion in Oaxaca City

- Transfer to airport to return home
Program Fees: $3,800
Scholarships available for current, degree-seeking part-time and full-time NWACC students and NWACC alumni.
Cost for single occupancy upgrade: $500

- As a participant, you may pay a reduced rate if you are receiving financial aid, grants, and/or scholarships in benefit your study abroad program. Please email StudyAbroad@nwacc.edu with evidence of awards prior to the program fee deadline to confirm exact payment amount.
