NWACC's Arts & Culture+ Black History events celebrate the contributions of Black people in art, science, society and business by offering people of all ages opportunities to learn about their contributions to the community, nation and world. The Black History events are part of the college's Arts & Culture+ event series. This year, there will be one Black History event.

Astrophysics & Afrofuturism: Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein in Conversation with Jaclyn House

About: Join us for an intimate chat with Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, theoretical physicist, feminist theorist and author of the book, "The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams Deferred."
"Good Day NWA" host Jaclyn House will base the conversation on Dr. Prescod-Weinstein’s book, which is part memoir, part love song to the universe, and all interrogation of science’s marginalization of the Black, the Indigenous, the queer, the disabled and the people and knowledge systems deemed Other. They will discuss the Standard Model of Particle Physics, the physics of melanin in skin, theories of dark matter, and all people’s fundamental right to know and love the night sky.
Whether you formally study physics, astronomy or another science or have an amateur’s armchair interest, this wide-ranging discussion of astrophysics to Afrofuturism will be informed by history, politics and the wisdom of Star Trek.
Chanda Prescod-Weinstein Bio: Dr. Prescod-Weinstein is an assistant professor of physics and astronomy and core faculty in women’s and
gender studies at the University of New Hampshire. Originally from East L.A., Dr.
Prescod-Weinstein is a graduate of Harvard College, University of California — Santa
Cruz and the University of Waterloo. One of under 100 Black American women to earn
a PhD from a department of physics, she is a theoretical physicist with expertise
in particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics, with an emphasis on dark matter.
In addition, Dr. Prescod-Weinstein is a theorist of Black feminist science, technology
and society studies, and a monthly columnist for New Scientist. Her research and advocacy
for marginalized people in physics and astronomy have won multiple awards, and her
first book, "The Disordered Cosmos: A Journey into Dark Matter, Spacetime, and Dreams
Deferred," is now available from Bold Type Books.

Jaclyn House Bio: Jaclyn is a Chicago native but has called NWA home for many years. Before pursuing a career
in media, she spent over 10 years in the corporate sector in merchandise support.
In 2016, she joined the KNWA/FOX24 family as a digital producer and created local
stories for web and social media. She then transitioned to appearing on-air Monday-Friday
with a “trending” segment. Jaclyn currently produces and co-hosts "Good Day NWA,"
the area’s only daily lifestyle show that highlights the amazing people and places
that make Northwest Arkansas a great place to live. Jaclyn is a mom of three and married
to her college sweetheart Raymond House. She enjoys speaking at various events in
NWA, meeting and connecting with new people, and has a passion for community service.
Jaclyn currently serves as a board member for the Arkansas Philharmonic Orchestra,
NWA Food Bank and Community Ambassador for Single Parent Scholarship Fund of NWA.
